 Resilience quote of the week:  “The human capacity for burden is like bamboo- far more flexible than you’d ever believe at first glance.”
― Jodi Picoult
This week at Thomas Coram
What a fantastic jam packed week we have had. We had our wonderful oracy showcase on Wednesday, with children from each class showcasing the fantastic poems they have been learning. It was great to hear such confident and enthusiastic children take to the stage and I was so impressed with them. Also on Wednesday, Year 4 were excited to participate in a Geography activity led by 25 Learning Ambassadors from Ashlyns. They had to use a variety of Geography skills, including map reading, answering facts and also working in a team! We are very fortunate to have these close links with the local secondary school and it was a positive experience for all! Yesterday, we had Kylie Grimes in who is a paralympian rugby player. She was so positive and awe inspiring and such a great role model for the children. I did become a little emotional as it was such a fantastic morning, hearing all she has achieved. Then today, we had James in to talk to our Year 5 children about some of the struggles he has faced being autistic and how he has overcome these. He is an incredible role model and the children really valued hearing his experiences. Then this afternoon, we had our incredible Matilda performance. Well done to the whole cast for all you have put in to it and to Mrs Randall, Mr Phelan, Mrs Thomson and Miss Minter for the hours you have given up to achieve such a phenomenal production! I cannot wait for parents and carers to see it next week. Have a great weekend.
Worship
On Monday, Rebecca led worship on The Last Supper and asked the children to think this week about how they can show gratitude to others and be kind. On Tuesday in Singing Assembly, we listened to Amber and April sing and Lily played the piano  from year 3. We were also fortunate to have a parent who generously gave his time to play a selection of songs on the piano. We then focused on singing 'Easter Jubilation' for next week's service.

Pins Parent/Carer Survey
As you are aware from previous correspondences, we as a school have been taking part in the Partnership for the Inclusion of Neurodiverse Pupils (PINS) project to raise awareness of the diverse needs of the students in our school. Miss Hill and Mrs Thomson have led the project and various strategies have been implemented into the classrooms:
  • Dyslexia friendly learning environments - clutter has been removed, classroom displays have been streamlined and labelling of resources has been adapted so they are accessible to all;

  • Awareness of the needs of children with neurodivergence - a big focus has been on supporting children with dyslexia, ADHD and ASD and staff have undertaken training to support their identification and techniques to support;

  • Parent interactions - all parents of children on the SEN register were invited to attend three PINS coffee mornings and these will continue next term;

  • SEN parent What's-App group - in response to parent feedback, we have facilitated a parent/carer What's-App group for children with additional needs. This is parent-led and staff from TC are not involved, however it has proven invaluable to so many of our families in the early stages. Please contact the office if your child has additional needs and you wish to be added;

  • Use of technology - we have incorporated an increased use of technology to support our learners, including speech-to-text software, Dictaphones, Immersive Reader and Microsoft Lens;

  • Resources to support sensory needs - we have further added to our calm room and sensory circuits which both provide useful support to many of our learners.

  • Pastoral support in school - we are very fortunate to have Mrs Ratcliffe, our pastoral support lead, at TC. Many children work with her each week, either in individual sessions, as part of a small group or the soft start provision before school each day. Mrs Ratcliffe also supports children at break and lunch times.

Here is the link to the PINS parent carer survey which the PINS project leads would appreciate parents completing. This will also provide useful feedback as to how we are doing as a school and next steps for development.
